FeelQuran

Al-Fatiha 1:1

Understand every word you pray.

FeelQuran is an app for Muslims who read and recite the Qur'an but don't understand it. It teaches you the meaning of what you say in salah first, then of the Qur'an as it is recited, one word at a time.

FeelQuran is being built now, for iOS, Android and the web. Leave your email address, and we'll tell you when you can start.

Who it's for

FeelQuran is for Muslims who can read the Arabic script and recite the Qur'an, and who say the same words in salah every day without following their meaning. You don't need to know any Arabic grammar. The app doesn't teach the script itself; it teaches what the words you already read mean.

What you learn, in order

  1. Everything you say in salah. Al-Fatiha, the short surahs that are recited most often, and the words of the prayer itself, such as the tashahhud, until you follow every word you say.
  2. The Qur'an as it is recited. Then the ayat you hear most, so that you follow the imam in the mosque and the reciters you listen to.
  3. Every word of the Qur'an. The course doesn't stop at the most frequent words. It goes on to the end.

How it works

You open the app and do one exercise at a time, for as long as you like. Each exercise shows a word in an ayah you know, with the meanings of the words around it. The app chooses every exercise for you: a new word when you're ready for one, and a word you learned earlier just before you would forget it, using spaced repetition. You also learn to hear the words in the recitation of a reciter, not only to read them.

This is possible because the Qur'an is a closed, fully known text: 6,236 ayat and about 77,000 words, each already analysed into its root, its form and its parts. For any learner and any ayah, FeelQuran can compute which words they know and which they don't, so it always knows which ayah you will understand next. More on how it works.

What it never does

Price

The salah passages are free, and so are the reviews of every word you have learned, for as long as you use the app. The rest of the course is a subscription. There are no ads.

Languages and devices

The meanings are taught in English and in Bosnian first, with Turkish, Urdu, Indonesian and Malay, and German to follow. FeelQuran runs on iPhone, on Android and in the browser, and works without a connection on phones.
